MIAMI, FL—A
red light-running motorcyclist lost his life when the
scooter he was riding collided with a
Miami Fire Rescue truck at the intersection of Northwest 12th Avenue and 46th Street on Jan. 23, according to the Miami Herald.
Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll told reporters the fire-rescue truck—
Fire Rescue Unit No. 9—was transporting a patient to Miami VA Medical Center when at approximately 6:15 a.m., the
deadly collision occurred.
Fire Rescue Unit No. 9 was en route to the VA hospital with its sirens and warning lights activated when an unidentified 36-year-old motorcyclist
failed to stop for a red traffic light at the intersection of Northwest 12th Ave. and 46th St.
Upon entering the intersection, the bike violently
broadsided the Miami Fire Rescue truck. The fire-rescue truck had the right of way at the time of the
scooter crash, which reportedly sent motorcycle debris flying as many as 100 feet away from the initial point of impact.
While none of the paramedics involved in the
Miami crash sustained any
injuries, the motorcyclist was not so fortunate. Paramedics performed CPR on the unresponsive motorcyclist before he was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center and ultimately pronounced dead. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time.
The patient who was initially being transported to the hospital was placed in another fire-rescue truck following the
South Florida collision. Investigations are ongoing.
According to statistics provided by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), of the 4,595 motorcycles involved in f
atal motor vehicle accidents nationwide in 2009, 431 were involved in
Florida crashes.
