MIAMI, FL— Miami Fire Rescue personnel on Jan. 24 were dispatched to the scene of a violent
collision in which a
red light-running FedEx truck slammed into a
Miami Metrobus,
injuring as many as 25 people, NBC Miami reported. According to Karla Damian, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade Transit (MDT), 18
crash victims were transported to area hospitals following the
Miami-Dade Transit bus crash. Reports suggested the driver of a FedEx truck
failed to stop at a red traffic light at the intersection of Northwest 17th Street and 7th Avenue and consequently drove into the path of a Miami-Dade Transit bus occupied by 30 people.
Authorities told reporters that
Miami Fire Rescue personnel tended to 24
bus riders, as well as the
Metrobus driver, at the scene of the
South Florida collision. Eighteen of those individuals were ultimately transported to local hospitals—including
Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital, and Miami Beach-based Mount Sinai Medical Center— for treatment. While the
FedEx truck driver managed to escape
injury in the
bus crash, he was cited for his
failure to stop at a red traffic light. According to the statistical data provided by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 221 buses were involved in
fatal accidents during the year 2009. Overall,
traffic accidents claimed the lives of 33,808
crash victims in the United States that year.
