MIAMI, FL—A Southwest Miami-Dade crash resulted in the death of a 7-year-old boy and sent two others—the child’s mother and his cousin—to the hospital with various injuries. According to information provided by CBS Local, the fatal traffic accident occurred near Southwest 268th Street and 137th Avenue in Miami’s Naranja neighborhood on the night of Jan. 24.

Reports indicated Homestead man Dagoberto Trevino Jr., 25, was behind the wheel of a Ford Crown Victoria—traveling along 137th Ave. in Naranja—when a mother, her 7-year-old son and her 8-year-old nephew attempted to cross the street. Given that the mother and two kids did not use the crosswalk at the nearby intersection of 137th Ave. and SW 268th St., Trevino was unable to avoid a collision with them.

According to WSVN reports, the youngest child, Ameer Blair succumbed to his traumatic injuries at the scene. The victim’s 42-year-old mother, Donelle Griffin and his 8-year-old cousin Jaheim Haddo were rushed to the hospital following the deadly car crash. While Haddo was treated for a broken leg and subsequently released, Griffin remained listed in critical but stable condition at the hospital as of Jan. 26.

Trevino told WSVN reporters, “When I hit the little boy, it hurt me so bad, it hurt me so bad that I saw his leg flip up, and when I went to go walk to him, he was already dead. There was blood coming out of his face… I got home, I grabbed The Bible, I asked God for forgiveness, I hugged my son… I don't know why, why would they cross the street while there's traffic? Why you can't go to the light, to the crossroad, wait till that light gets red.”

Although police did not suspect any negligence on the part of the driver, whom was sober and abiding by all traffic laws at the time of the fatal collision, this is not always the case.

Take Transportation for America’s Dangerous by Design report for 2011, for instance. In that report, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area (often referred to as the South Florida metropolitan area or Miami metro area) was dubbed the fourth most dangerous metro area for pedestrians. Between the years 2000 and 2009, 1,555 pedestrian deaths were recorded.
