MIAMI, FL—A bicyclist lost his life after becoming involved in an unfortunate collision with a Tri-Rail train in Fort Lauderdale on the morning of Nov. 9. According to information provided by the Sun Sentinel, the violent cyclist accident was reported to officials from the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department around 7 a.m.

Detective Travis Mandell of the Fort Lauderdale Police Dept. told reporters a northbound train went through the railroad crossing at Northwest 62nd Street in Fort Lauderdale, just before a male bicyclist in his 50s attempted to cross the tracks. While the northbound train passed through the intersection without incident, the cyclist evidently failed to notice an oncoming southbound Tri-Rail train and was consequently hit. The unidentified Fort Lauderdale crash victim was said to be approximately 6 feet tall.

Although responding paramedics rushed the severely injured bicyclist to North Broward Medical Center following the railroad collision, his injuries ultimately proved fatal at the hospital. Police told reporters that the railroad crossing guard arms were functioning at the time of the deadly Fort Lauderdale crash.

Fort Lauderdale Police are expected to conduct a full investigation into the fatal cyclist accident.

Statistics provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) suggested there were 611 railway fatalities reported in the U.S. between 2008 and March of 2011. In Florida alone, train accidents resulted in 35 railroad deaths and 168 railroad injuries during the same time frame.
