MIAMI, FL—Five people were hospitalized with various injuries following a violent
South Florida collision involving a small
car and a
tractor-trailer. According to NBC Miami, the
18-wheeeler accident occurred in
Miami-Dade County’s Westchester neighborhood
at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 17.
Witness reports suggested a Honda Accord and an 18-wheeler were heading west on Coral Way in Southwest Miami-Dade County when the semi attempted to make a left turn at Southwest 84th Avenue. Seemingly unable to swerve away in time, the Honda consequently
crashed into the truck. Although the exact cause of the 18-wheerler accident remains unclear, officials said
speed played a role in the
traffic crash. According to information provided,
hydraulic rescue tools (the Jaws of Life) were used to extract one of the
crash victims from the
wreckage. The driver of the Honda—23-year-old
Miami resident
Alexandria Estrella—and four passengers in the car (whom also reside in Miami)—
Ana Posada, 18, Moises Arnold Alvarez, 18, Anthony Emmanuel Del Rio, 18, and
Jovanni Oliva, 20— were transported to the
Trauma Center at
Kendall Regional Hospital following the South Florida collision. Estrella and Posada apparently suffered
critical injuries in the traffic crash. The driver of the semi truck, on the other hand, escaped
serious injury in the
Southwest Miami-Dade wreck. Investigations into the injurious
collision are ongoing.
