Recent and Upcoming PresentationsMembers of our firm take an active interest in giving back to the profession. Legal groups ask us to share lessons from trial experience in Continuing Legal Education seminars, meetings and conventions. This is a sampler of recent and scheduled presentations by our firm's members: Founding Partner Stephen F. Rossman addressed the National Board of Directors Meeting and Educational Conference of the United States Lifesaving Association on May 6, 2005, in Miami Beach. His topic, "Liability and Responsibility," focused on recent changes in the law of the Florida Supreme Court, which increase the responsibility of municipalities for water safety in areas not specifically designated for swimming. The court ruled the City of Miami Beach was indeed liable for two beach drownings near beachside concessions, boardwalk and shower areas, even if the areas were not specifically designated for swimming. Partner Howard Spier addressed a meeting of the United Transportation Union May 2 and 3 in Macon, Ga. He spoke on the Federal Employers' Liability Act. Founding Partner Chuck Baumberger is a designated counsel for the UTU, and Mr. Spier has represented railroad workers and accident victims since 1982. Mr. Spier is a national director of the National Academy of Railway Labor Attorneys. Founding Partner Chuck Baumberger addressed the April 7-8, 2005, Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers seminar in Orlando on jury selection: "2005 Voir Dire Seminar: Brainstorming With the Masters." His subject: "Using Peremptory Challenges and Challenges for Cause Effectively." Founding Partner Steve Rossman co-chaired the seminar. Founding Partner Stephen Rossman spoke on "Liability for Injuries and Deaths Sustained in Open Bodies of Water" in a March 4, 2005, symposium on Aquatic Law and Safety sponsored by the International Swimming Hall of Fame, The Broward County Trial Lawyers Association, Robson Forensic and Mellon United National Bank. |
