1 year after fatal SC train crash, life-saving tech activated. Did it take too long?

Firm Partner Howard A. Spier was involved in a case in which an Amtrak passenger train slammed into a stopped engine in Cayce, leaving a set of derailed passenger cars bent into a V shape and a destroyed Amtrak locomotive engine. Two people, including the conductor Michael Cella, tragically lost their lives and nearly 100 passengers were injured.

Spier represented Michael's widow in a wrongful death suit against CSX and Amtrak. The suit was filed in Jacksonville, FL, and it came down hard on the companies, particularly CSX, for negligence and safety failures. Cella’s suit was settled, Spier said, but that’s little consolation.
